About me
I’m a Software Engineer based in Leiria. these days I lead a small team at News UK, rebuilding The Times’ website on a simpler stack and consolidating fifteen years of legacy infrastructure into something far cheaper to run. I like the unglamorous problems — moving 2.2 million articles to WordPress without anyone noticing anything, creating editorial tools that don’t get in the way and keeping a website that millions of people read every day fast and boring.
Before, I built websites at Human Made for things like enterprise SaaS and UK membership orgs, and freelanced on a mix of weird and rewarding projects: a course site for a university that took a million visits on a $5 server, a paywalled PDF library for an education startup, a payment system for a food delivery startup.
Somewhere in the middle of all that I helped build Já Não Dá Para Abastecer for VOST Portugal during the 2019 fuel crisis — a crowdsourced map of which petrol stations still had fuel, backed by a google sheet and a lot of caching, that ended up serving millions of requests an hour during the strike.\
Outside of work I run my own little corner of the internet — AS205378 — where I mess around with BGP and anycast IPs for fun. Announcing the same prefix from multiple places and watching packets find their way is the kind of thing that has no business being entertaining, but it is.
